Snowgum has a long history, having started as Australian Scout Shops, which first opened soon after Scouting came to Australia in 1908. The growth of specialist pursuits such as cross country skiing and rock climbing, along with the adventure travel phenomenon saw a rapid growth in outdoor enthusiasts, most of whom were not directly involved in Scouting.

In 1993 the transition to Snowgum and broader market appeal commenced. A fresh new look and feel, a unique logo and a revolutionary franchise growth strategy. The Snowgum voyage into mainstream retailing began.
