Red Bull Street Style - New Zealander Graeson Cooper Wins
Monday, 19 April 2010 06:05
Graeson Cooper is a 19 year old Kiwi boy who bet out 15 Australians to be crowned the first Australasian Red Bull Street Style Champion in Sydney, Australia last July.

Holding the Australasian Street Style title means that Graeson will battle 65 other finalists at the Red Bull Street Style World Championships in South Africa in late April.

Red Bull Street Style follows the format of 3 minutes, 2 players, and 1 ball and blends the footwork of freestyle soccer and the skills of break dancing.  Creativity, control, flair, rhythm and difficulty is what the judges look for as contestants battle each other one on one for twenty seconds at a time vying for the judges favor.

"The key to freestyle football is to make it look effortless," says the 19-year-old from West Auckland who will represent New Zealand at the Red Bull Street Style world final in South Africa. "Everybody can do the moves but they can look sloppy. I practice my moves over and over again to make them look polished."

Graeson preferred the original aspect of the sport, 'keepie uppie' (juggling), but with the breakdance evolution of the sport, Graeson has been practicing a new skill set to take with him to the World Championships

"There is a big breakdance influence in freestyle football now so I’ve been practicing backflips and handstands because the judges are looking for freestyle football, acrobatics and breakdancing fused together, not just pure freestyle football."

Graeson leaves Auckland on the 9th of April to attend the Red Bull World Championships.
