Slovakia ’s Filip Polc took top honors in the Red Bull Desafio no Morro, an unprecedented mountain bike downhill competition inside a “favela” (slum) in Rio de Janeiro this Sunday (Sep 27).  Polc’s best time of 1:39.91 down the 760 meters of the favela’s alleys and staircases was enough to edge Brazilian Markolf Berchtold by over 1.5s. Britain ’s Dan Atherton completed the podium with a top mark of 1:42.29. Dan’s brother Gee Atherton entered the competition in Brazil as the clear favorite, and confirmed those expectations by topping the qualifying session on Saturday. Race day didn’t equal lucky day for Gee, however, who ended up last among the 10 riders competing after suffering a flat rear tire halfway through the course.  “To see an entire favela community mobilize to make such an event possible has impressed me a lot,” admitted Polc, 27, who credited his win to a downhill biker’s best friend – gravity. “I just tried to leave the brakes open as much as possible and let gravity do its job.” 29-year-old Berchtold was acclaimed as a megastar by the favela’s fans after claiming a strong second for the home team. “This was simply amazing. The warmth of the people here has moved us all,” said the biker, who hails from the small city of Schroeder in Brazil ’s deep South. “I focused on getting faster and faster with each run, and in the end it paid off for this incredible crowd.”  Over 100 local community inhabitants worked in the Red Bull Desafio no Morro, considered the first-ever major international sporting event to take place inside a favela in Rio de Janeiro .
