Sabrina Jonnier back on form at penultimate round of UCI World Cup season held at La Bresse, France, at the weekend.

Sabrina Jonnier, of Hyéres, France, likes long tracks that play to her strengths: endurance and fortitude, but this weekend at La Bresse, France, she rediscovered her former pace on the short, muddy track.
 
"I am so happy," she exclaimed after the race.
 
"I had an okay practice on Friday and Saturday was better. The track was dry, but then it rained all night! This morning was terrible – it was very slippery, but I loved it – I knew I was riding well and so I thought I could do something good here."
 
The Maxxis-Rocky Mountain rider began the season with an injury to her lower back and has struggled to find her rhythm through the season, but with a legion of French fans screaming for her at La Bresse, she managed to take the hotseat with a time of 2:37.830 with only two girls still at the top.
 
"I had a really good run, but played it a little too safe at the bottom where it was very slippery, but it was still good."
 
Floriane Pugin, of France, bettered Jonnier by a mere .002 seconds before Tracy Moseley, of Great Britain, somehow managed to shave almost five seconds more to take the winning time: 2:32.829. Jonnier took third happily – knowing more importantly that she had reconnected with her race pace.
 
Back in the frame: 2010 UCI Downhill World Cup Champion Sabrina Jonnier, of Hyères, France, said she felt she was back on the pace again at La Bresse, France, for the sixth UCI World Cup Downhill, at the weekend.

"It was a good feeling – even coming across the line into first, I would normally be quite stressed, but I didn't care – I knew I had a great run and if I am third that's okay for today," she smiles.
 
The likable Jonnier was again amazed at the speed and strength of her close rival and good friend, Moseley.
 
"Damn, Tracy is on fire this year and she is riding so well and is so strong," she offers.
 
"Two years ago on the same track and on the same split I was two seconds up on her and today she was two seconds up on me. It's in the pedalling – she is so strong, because I definitely gave it everything I had in my legs today."
 
Jonnier knew at the start of the weekend that La Bresse would be the beginning of her World Championship campaign.
 
"It is a weird feeling and people will probably think I am crazy, but all weekend I could feel something knocking on my chest and it was like, 'hey, I want to come out, I want to come out!' and I guess my body let myself ride today the way I wanted."
 
Jonnier said that after Windham and then her French National Champs results she wasn't really happy with where she was at and put that anger into her training.
 
"I just want to be happy on my bike again and even though short tracks don't suit me, I had fun riding my bike at La Bresse."
 
"I took some time off at home and went paddleboarding with friends and I didn't think about racing at all for a while – I forgot about it and then started my training properly again, but with a bit more anger," she laughs.
 
That time off included riding for three days riding with a good friend who is a freerider at Les Gets.
 
"I didn't really push myself, I just rode a lot and laughed all day long with my friend," she smiles.
 
Jonnier said the jumps became a real challenge in the wet conditions, which accounted for the big gaps in the field behind third place.
 
"The rain meant I had to give it everything to make the big jump – apparently only four girls jumped it – the other girls had to go around because they didn't have enough speed to do it," she explains.
 
Jonnier also discovered something new about herself when she worked her way up to one of the big jumps on the course.
 
"There was a massive jump at the finish, which they had to redo on the Thursday because a female 4X rider crashed into it. So they made it shorter."
 
"I thought all the girls were doing it so my mate Steve Smith and my teammates Ruaridh and Mark asked, 'have you jumped it yet?' and I said, 'I am going to do it now' so they said, 'follow me' – but Ruaridh was jumping boy's style and hardly pedalling. I was coming into it way too slow, but I still did the jump even though I cased very hard. Then we realised I was the first girl to do it and that's not normal for me. I usually watch the other girls do it first, so I was like, 'oh wow!' That gave me a bit more confidence."
 
"One thing I have realised this season is that I have really amazing friends who have supported me to find myself on the bike again and that's really nice," Jonnier adds.
 
The spectators on the side of the track were amazing once again and Jonnier credits them with bringing her back to her former self on the bike.
 
"Two years ago it was the same – there are so many people come out for this race and they are mostly French so it's pretty cool. It's pretty hard to focus on the track because they are so loud – you feel like you are flying on the track. It's like a mini Fort William," she laughs.
 
Jonnier will now join a training camp with the French team as it prepares for the World Championships to be held at Champéry, Switzerland, in September before racing in the final World Cup of the season at Val di Sole, Italy, in two weeks.
 
"Val di Sole is a beautiful track, but it is not one of my favourites. In the dry it is pretty good and in the wet it can be really difficult. For now I am not going to think too much about it – I am just going to keep riding my bike and prepare myself for these last two races."
 
And her preparation looks to be right on track after La Bresse.
 
"It's good for my head to have a good result like this one three weeks out from the World Champs," she smiles.
