“For sure the hardest enduro race ever” – Chris Birch’s final words after finishing on third place found unanimous assent in the field of participants. The fifth edition of the Red Bull Romaniacs hard enduro rally in the very heart of the Romanian Carpathian Mountains was a race of extremes: 15 challenging obstacles at the in city prologue, 620 off road kilometres on four days, toughest conditions on the race track, four different classes, 208 starters from 29 nations and 121 finishers; all of them winners with a mental attitude that combines determination, power and endurance.Who decides to start at world’s hardest enduro rally has to be totally passionate about off-road racing. Red Bull Romaniacs is not a simple race it is a tour the force, merciless and nasty. Those who bushwhacked best through the wilderness, managed to bring their bikes back into the paddocks every night and kept their weaker self under control were the ones to survive and finally make it to the ultimate finish line. After four years of French victories – Cyril Despres (2004, 2005, 2007) and Michel Gau (2006) – it was a UK rider to make it to the top spot of the podium. Graham Jarvis (UK, Sherco) won the rally at his first ever attempt with solid riding as well as a strategically perfect performance. Why navigating yourself, if you can follow a veteran Romaniacs rider and superb navigator? This was Gerhard Forster (GER, BMW), who repeated his runner-up spot from 2007. Chris Birch (NZL, KTM) - physically groggy - on third also repeated his podium spot from last year. After Saturday’s prologue it was a battle of three riders to fight for the top three places. Thrilling until the end as nobody is safe from problems of all kinds out in the Romanian wilderness. Gerhard Forster’s broken gear box on day three and Chris Birch’s navigation mistakes got in the way of making up a nine, respectively 16 minutes lag. None of the other pro riders – among them twelve times US trial champion Geoff Aaron (USA, KTM Christini), Dakar rider Frans Verhoeven (NED, KTM), Paul Bolton (UK, Husquarna) or winner of 2006 Michel Gau (FRA, KTM) – ever had a real chance of butting into the threesome but took the extra parts in this edition of the Red Bull Romaniacs. The main part of participants, 174 starters, entered the five days event as amateur riders – either in pairs in the Hobby or Expert class or as Single Experts. Sometimes their tracks differed only slightly from the professionals’ and asked a lot of navigation and riding skills from its riders. Numerous drop outs, especially in the Experts Team class where only eight out of 24 teams finished the race, should follow after the first tricky part on Saturday. It cost some quite an effort to go over the obstacle course in the city center of Sibiu; however – as some experienced Romaniacs riders knew – you can’t win anything at the prologue, but lose all and thus the real contest began out in the woods, up the steep and slippery hills and down the muddy trails, over mountain ridges and high speed sections. Rain and cold weather tightened the conditions on the tracks even more and daily stages between 120 and 180 kilometres with up to 9.000 vertical meters became an incomparable challenge. Oliver Brichard (AUT, Single Expert), Michel Dumoulin and Aron Gorog (BEL/ROM, Experts Team) and Tony Gash and Steve Martin (UK, Hobby Class) were awarded the winners’ trophies in their classes. All in all, 121 riders were officially awarded “Red Bull Romaniacs Finisher 2008”. And although tiredness and the physical effort of the last days were carved into the participants’ faces they assured to come back next year; particularly those, who had to resign in 2008. The first edition of the Red Bull Romaniacs was held in 2004 with 30 competitors, succeeding after five years to assemble more than 200 riders; 34 of them professional and high value riders. Participants from 29 countries were at the start of the fifth edition of Red Bull Romaniacs. Germany was the country with the highest number of participants - 44, but the countries at the start included Andorra, Norway, Canada, Botswana, Italy and Syria to be represented by a single competitor. Red Bull Romaniacs will be back on track in 2009 – stay tuned for the exact date and inscription details! Final Results Pro Class 1. Graham Jarvis UK Sherco 19:27:27 2.
