The Germany-based Berlinièros Sports Agency set up the FMX awards in 2006 to honor the world's best freestyle motocross riders and year by year, they are garnering more attention. For 2009, an ‘expert group’ nominated the riders for each category and then it was the fans that had the chance to pick the winners via fmxawards.com. The allocated expert group consisted of Jason Moriarty (FMX judge, pro rider), Jimmy Verburgh (FMX4Ever), Jose Gaspar (fmxnews.com.br/brazil), Jörg Hotzel (IFMXF), Oliver Franke (Berlinièros Sports Agency), Marek Rejman (GSMA, Gladiator Games), Marko Manthey (IFMXF), Ryan Leyba (ESPN), Marko Roth (FMX Judge), Soeren Sellmer (IFMXF), Wolfgang Brandt (motoX/Germany) and Tobias Hannig (forty8.de).  The ultimate award went to Robbie Maddison for the Best International FMX Rider in 2009, but it was New Zealand’s own, Levi Sherwood, that impressed the judges and fans the most with his rookie year, taking out the Best International FMX Rookie award. Levi gained notoriety when four days before the first round of the 2009 Red Bull X-Fighters in Mexico City, the relatively unknown rider said, "This is one event I've always wanted to ride and hopefully I'll do good."  Filling in for Jeremy "Twitch" Stenberg was a dream come true for Levi and he did more than good, he won it! Levi made history by becoming the youngest rider ever to win a Red Bull X-Fighter's event, and he brought to the table runs that not only included monster backflip combos, but also tricks where his body looked almost 'rubber-like' with massive extension and unique style. Levi impressed on a large scale and besides one or two small mistakes, he walked away with the win after a flawless display of riding where he showed maturity well beyond his years. Tes Sewell said of Levi, "I think we're seeing the future of freestyle right here" while commentating in Mexico City and Levi's skill is more than backing up this statement.
