Red Bull Build The Trick back in 2007
Sunday, 31 August 2008 09:37

Photographer: Lukas NazdraczewOnce again the time had come to turn the spotlight on Poland’s best skateboarding spots. The second edition of the Red Bull Build the Trick tour started in September and had the aim of improving the best skateboarding places around the country. Skateboarders from all over Poland sent in their applications to Red Bull, who chose those places that most urgently needed to be renovated.

After nine days of hard work, Red Bull Build The Trick 2007 completed its task of renovating the country’s best skateboarding spots. Thanks to the commitment of a strong team comprised of Poland’s best skaters, the Tricity towns of Torun, Czestochowa and Katowice received new places to skate.

The construction work was done by two teams, each under the name of a well-known skateboarding magazine. Teams “Info Magazine” and “360 mag” not only consisted of dedicated skaters but also included photographers and filmmakers, who provided documentary evidence of the superb initiative.

The project started off in Tricity. The first spots were drawn and the participants set out to work with brooms and concrete. During three days in Tricity, both teams managed to build eight new fantastic places for Poland’s skateboarding fans. Team 360mag loved the banks of Morena neighborhood, while team Info Magazine fought for very untidy places in the centers of Gdansk and Gdynia.

The next tour stop was Torun, a city with an established skateboarding community but not many good places to ride. The stairs near Wisla River Boulevard have long been known as a neat skateboarding spot. However, it was not until the Red Bull Build the Trick teams came along that the place received its final polish to become a perfect riding spot. Michal Juras in particular seemed to enjoy the new spot, underlining his enthusiasm with a hardflip with bank landing. During their visit to Torun, the Build the Trick guys also renovated the broken bus-stop bench, which will hopefully be of use to the local skateboarders for a long time.

Czestochowa turned out to be the biggest surprise of the trip. Nobody expected there to be so many good places to ride. “If I had such a spot in my city, I’d go there every day”, said Tomek Kotrych after reviving the pyramid near 8th Road in central Czestochowa all by himself. In addition, concrete roadblocks near the ring road were turned into a classic urban wallride.

The last stop of the BTT tour was Silesia, a city with many undiscovered skateboarding spots. The first days in Katowice didn’t turn out too lucky for the team because of heavy showers. However, it takes more than a bit of rain to stop Red Bull Build the Trick and the marble surfaces near Spodek arena turned out to be the perfect shelter for the skaters. On the last day, the weather improved and works on the Sosnowiec skate park could finally be started. About five years ago, the park had been a neat spot for riding but during the course of time it had become a shabby and deserted place covered with trash. The teams not only breathed new life into the park but also applied some colorful graffiti to the obstacles. As the final act of this year’s tour, the teams celebrated the revival of a deserted swimming pool in Siemianowice’s summer resort.

Before the Red Bull Build the Trick guys left the last city, the hardest working and most creative team members received awards. “I don’t want this to end. I could do it the whole year round! Find new places, repair them and then... skate!” said Michal Mazur, devoted member of team Info Magazine, who won himself „Best Trick” award on the last spot.
