Over 100 athletes have converged on Wanaka for The North Face Freeski Open of New Zealand, presented by Volkl, which begins with the slopestyle qualifiers and semi-finals on Thursday, 1 September at Snow Park. Now in it’s seventh year, the Freeski Open is officially recognised on the international freeski World Tour alongside the world’s biggest freeski events and has established itself as the biggest event of its kind in the southern hemisphere attracting the world’s best freeski athletes from across the globe. |

After stellar performances during the Northern Hemisphere season both Rebecca Torr and Liam Ryan have been promoted to the national team while long-time national team member Juliane Bray has now been elevated to the Legends. |

Freeskier Jossi Wells Named the Otago Junior Sports Person of the Year |

Jossi Wells, a multiple winner of the junior sportsperson of the year award, took the trophy again for 2011, Wells has won the award every year since 2005, with the exception of 2010 when snow sports teammate Kendall Brown took the top honours. |

The International Olympic Committee announced overnight in London that men’s and women's ski halfpipe has been added to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. The decision to include ski half-pipe was based on the event’s ability to add value to the Olympic Games with positive factors including its universality, youth appeal and gender equity. |
