The world famous World Heli Challenge was resurrected in 2009 and returns this year from 30 July to 8 August, this time bringing back the legendary “big air” event that in its time drew some of the largest spectator crowds of any snow event in the Southern Hemisphere.
Fifty of the world’s top skiers and snowboarders will converge on Wanaka for eight days, including two days of helicopter-accessed competition with a goal of finding out which athlete is the best "all rounder" by combining their freeride and free style skills to showcase their overall talent.

Wanaka’s Jossi Wells will be crowned the Association of Freeski Professionals (AFP) 2009-2010 Overall World Champion, marking the first time a Kiwi freeskier has finished the season ranked No. 1 in the world.

New Zealand Paralympic skiier Adam Hall has finished seventh in the standing Super-G race at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Paralympic Games, achieving his goal of a top 10 finish. Hall, from Otago, completed the run in a time of 1min 23.34 seconds. The race was won by Gerd Schonfelder of Germany in 1min 20.11seconds.
