Jossi Wells, a multiple winner of the junior sportsperson of the year award, took the trophy again for 2011, Wells has won the award every year since 2005, with the exception of 2010 when snow sports teammate Kendall Brown took the top honours.

Jossi was always going to be hard to beat when he was named Freeski World Champion at the beginning of the qualifying period (April 2010), and so it proved to be.  His world rankings of 1st in halfpipe and 7th in slopestyle combined to give him the overall title.  Even after being forced to sit out the entire 2010 Southern Hemisphere season while rehabilitating a broken ankle and getting off to a late start at the Northern Hemisphere competitions, Wells maintained a fourth place overall world ranking at the end of the 2010/11 season.

The annual Otago Sports Awards dinner was held Friday evening at the Dunedin Town Hall in front of an audience of 400.   This was Wells final year in the junior category.

Wells will head off to Whistler towards end of June for three weeks of training on a glacier. 

“The warm sunny conditions will be conducive to performance progressions,” said his father and coach, Bruce Wells.

He then heads back to New Zealand for the Southern Hemisphere season where, in addition to getting some good training in, he will compete in the Winter Games NZ and the New Zealand Freeski Open.
