Snow Sports New Zealand today announced selections to its 2011 New Zealand Snowboard Teams.  After stellar performances during the Northern Hemisphere season both Rebecca Torr and Liam Ryan have been promoted to the national team while long-time national team member Juliane Bray has now been elevated to the Legends.

The snowboard teams represent the pinnacle of New Zealand snowboarding today. The National Team features elite riders representing New Zealand snowboarding and embodies all areas of snowboarding from Olympians, World Cup Medallists, and TTR World Tour Competitors. The Development Squad consists of riders who are on the pathway to the National Team and/or who are excelling with significant potential in their chosen pathway. The Squad members can represent New Zealand at any international level event, including Youth Worlds; Junior Worlds; US Amateur Snowboard Association Nationals; World Snowboard Federation; International Ski Federation or TTR World Tour events.

“Our national team is well-rounded with members covering all disciplines from Boarder Cross to Slopestyle, Halfpipe and Freeriding,” said Adam Dooney, director of coach and sport development for Snow Sports New Zealand.

“The Northern Hemisphere season saw many of our national team members atop the podium at international events,” said Dooney.

“Newcomer, Rebecca Torr (Possum) was named Ballpark Rookie of the Year and placed second overall in slopestyle at the Winter Dew Tour.  Shelly Gotlieb was on the slopestyle podium at the World Championships, taking third while narrowly missing the podium at the Burton Canadian Open where she placed fourth.   Rebecca Sinclair took out the halfpipe title at the USASA Nationals and placed fourth at the World Championships.  Carl Murphy continued to dominate on the international stage, taking silver at the WSF Para-Snowboard World Cup.  In her first year on the freeride world tour, Maria Kuzma stood atop the podium on the fifth stop and ended her season ranked fourth in the world.”

The development squad welcomes three new members, one of whom was on the Youth Squad last year (Frazer Dowling) and two new members (Milu Multhaup-Appleton and Michael McMillian).
