2008 Kiteboarding Wave Nationals Wrap Up
Saturday, 29 November 2008 20:02
Over recent years, there are two clear trends evolving in the sport of Kiteboarding. The first and original one is jumping and freestyle. The more handle passes and twists you can perform while you are 10 meters up in the air, the better your score.

The second trend is the pure joy of wave riding. With the kite development progressing rapidly over the past few years, there are now actually kites available that completely de-power when you are riding a wave and in the purest form, you can even use a regular surfboard without straps.

When The Kiteboarding Shop (www.kiteboarding.co.nz) considered creating a new event, we intended to create a spectator explosive occasion and to target the biggest potential competitor field amongst the kiteboarders. We hoped for a large field of “seasoned” participants but did not expect such a positive feedback from all the young freestyle riders and were pleased to have a total of 63 competitors signed up for the first ever New Zealand Kiteboarding Wave Nationals.

The first day of competition Friday November 14, 2008 needed to be called off due to the lack of wind but the sunshine and a really good forecast for the next few days kept everyone smiling. On Saturday the competition was on and Kina Road impressed the competitors. Blue skies, solid wind and overhead high waves offered world class, down the line wave riding. With a gorgeous clear Mt Taranaki in the background, the competitors were going full out in 3 expression sessions and by the end of the day, 14 had made it to the next round. Sunday offered smaller waves but more wind and after two exciting heats, the four finalists were established.

In the final two heats the top four women, followed by the top four men, offered world class kiteboard wave riding, that blew the spectators away. The action packed heats, with huge sprays generated on the top and bottom turns, followed by radical cut backs were an excitement to watch.

After a long battle the first ever New Zealand Wave champions were established and the following competitors proudly received their trophies:

Men: 1st: Jamie Barrow, 2nd Brock Cleary, 3rd Gavin Broadbent
Women: 1st Laura Adams, 2nd Shona Lee, 3rd Charlotte Mills

This successful non profitable event would not have been possible without the generous support of Venture Taranaki, Port Taranaki, Mata Beer and Weatherford. Any proceeds including the sale of pictures and the video will be donated to The Child Cancer Foundation.
